And now, an update

Hi all, just a quick post to say:

I uploaded photos of the apartment from before we moved in.

Photos of the apartment after we moved in will be posted sometime after we get my stuff from Vermont. (I don’t exactly know when that will be.)

Internet is still scheduled to arrive Friday, but I accidentally figured out how to use email and general web browsing from my phone today. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I had to call the landlord to help with the clogged tub. The tub wasn’t clogged, it was just in “bath mode”. This building is from the World War II era… back then tubs had a different way of keeping the water from draining than that fandangled way we have today.

I have so much stuff to do to become legitimate here, but it’s so overwhelming.

Job search is on hold until my stuff is here. It’s impossible to have appointments to do with the apartment AND appointments to do with a job. I’m sorry to anyone who disagrees with that. It will work out how it should when the time is right, dammit.

I really wanna go see Burn After Reading.

Dawg and I are confirmed for the Neverwas party. You should go too. And sponsor someone who needs a ticket, like Sybil or Cissa or (errrrrrrrrrrrr, um, sigh, I suck, who else?)

Georgie keeps sleeping UNDER the orange comforter, despite the heat in the apartment. Everyone, including myself, is wondering how she spends hours upon hours under those covers without coming out for air. *shrug*

I don’t care for the grocery store within walking distance so I need to find the address for the Super Stop & Shop (ahh, there it is!) and do a full grocery shopping. And for everything Dawg said he likes but wasn’t in the mood for the other day — I’m buying it to keep on hand.

Do you know how hard it is in this day and age to not have a microwave at your fingertips? Mine is in a storage unit in Vermont, and not even sure if we’ll use it. Anyone know how to get the stain and stench of burnt-to-the-point-of-being-on-fire microwave popcorn out of a microwave?

Oh, and I need some real in person friends. Anyone wanna be my friend? Hang out? This whole waiting for Dawg to come home so that I have another human to interact with is not fair to him. He just spent 10+ hours at work and comes home to a humanly deprived Poppy when all he wants is a nap. So… movie, anyone? Coffee? (blurg) shopping???? Something. Something! Sparky? Robin? Anyone else close by? Really, I’m not kidding. I’m not begging, though. Just, um, nudging. :grins:

Ok, bye.

  1. The apartment looks AWESOME! I love the hardwood floors and the tub/shower! Take your time Poppy…it’ll all come together – the friends, the job, all of it. SO SO happy for you!!

(wish I was closer, I’d be a friend) :grins:

  2. Great apartment – love the hardwood floors! Sorry that I’m not closer, or I’d take you shopping, out for coffee and to a movie! Damn these 3500 miles between NY and SF.

  3. Hi, just wanted to let you know that I finally posted a pic of Thing 1 with ALL of our new (thanks to you) found friends, you should go take a look. Thanks so much! :grins:

  4. Not sure where in the city you moved to, but my gal Gia is working in Queens a lot now. Spent yesterday in Forest Hills and the other day in Astoria. And we have bestest friends who live in Kew Gardens. Her company is in Brooklyn, but she only goes there once a week on Fridays.

Listen to me…pawning off my girlfriend on an unsuspecting world.

  5. Dude! I loved those pictures! I think I left you a buttload of comments over at Flickr (sorry!). I can’t wait to see pics of the place once you furnish it Poppy & Dawg style. I have ants in my pants about it!

I would so totally love to hang out with you, Pop-a-bop. I know you’re closer to me now than ever before but it’s still a bit of a haul for a spontaneous visit. But I will make the journey at some point after you’re properly settled! I know that doesn’t help with you needing someone to goof off with NOW, though (sorry!).

I think you should try Tug’s lemony suggestion for cleaning the microwave. I saw it on “How Clean is Your House” and it’s supposed to work. Good luck!

  6. oh, poppy, the apartment is phenomenal! i’m still so thrilled for you and dawg. so excited that i am about to get all in your business…

are those doorknobs the glass handled ones? my friend’s mom collects them so if you are missing one, lemme know.

the dark wood border around the hardwood floors made my heart jump a little for ya.

then again, i am also thinking the black accent tiles in the bathroom are way cool. i’m interested to see what you did with the decorating.

the bathtub’s fixtures crack me open. never saw anything like that before. fun!

i am really missing my radiator heat. been so long since i lived in the house i grew up in, but i love heating up my jacket or drying out my gloves and boots. of course, warming up my frozen butt after sled riding is just not the same without a radiator! enjoy for me.

  7. I will be your friend when I know I am gonna be in NY and can hang out…or even if I am not in NY, I’m only a few hours away and will come visit…of course, the after work during the week would be hard but weekends.

The apt looks amazing. It’s gonna look even better when you have stuff in it.

  8. YAY for your new place! It looks awesome, congrats :)

DC is a bit far away to hang out, but I defintely want to come visit once you get settled. Train ride is only 3 hours! :grins:

  9. Aww poppy…I wish I were closer so we could hang out!

Thank you for linking me for sponsorship possibilities! you rock!!

I hope things will start to go better for you adjusting to The City..

    (((HUGS)))

  10. Love the subway tile in the bathroom. Can’t figure out why you have FOUR spigots though.

Love the detail in the hardwood floors. And the antique floor tiles. They are in excellent shape.

Love the radiators … haven’t seen those since oh, 1955.

    Love the views.

    Love the many, many windows.

    Love the Art Deco details.

Awesome, truly awesome. I hope it’s not costing an arm and a leg though.

  11. Lemon or mild vinegar water will remove the smell. And leave it open for awhile afterwards! (Especially after burning something.)

Usually I wash mine with a washcloth I’ve put in the dishwater (before starting dishes) and then rinse well. Afterwards, I do a mild vinegar spray and wipe. Just add one or two capfuls of vinegar to a small spray bottle of water. Vinegar is a great disinfectant, also.

Rambling…sorry. But give it a try.

So how did the drain (noun) drain (verb)? By stepping on it?

  12. Can I just tell you – I LOVE your hardwood floors!! LOVE THEM!! Woman, I am literally 20 minutes away from you – we can hang out any time you want.

But until then, I will drool over your hardwood floors.

  13. Poppy, I would totally be one of your for-real friends if you didn’t live so far away. You and Dawg really should have found a new apartment in Seattle instead of NYC, even if your brand new apartment is all sparkling and shiny and beautiful. As for the burnt popcorn dilemma, I know no solutions. We have a friend who bought a condo a couple of years ago, and the oven smelled so strongly of curry that he had to buy a new oven. Hopefully you won’t have to buy a new microwave.

  14. The next time I am in NY, I am so going to bug you. Problem is, I do not know right now when that will be! But my cousin is in Jersey, but works in Manhattan, so you two should be friends. Seriously – she’s way cooler than me.
Plus, she has a teeny baby and a 2 year old you can go gah-gah over!
Oh and Gilda wants to play with you on Webkinz, but wants to know what nights you’re most likely to be on there.
Finally (will I ever shut the hell up?!) – place is FABULOUS and I am so freaking happy for you and Dawg. It is so cute that you are buying stuff he likes just to have around. :)
Oh wait – and thanks for the link. I need a sponsor!
Okay, you’re welcome, I am shutting up right NOW.

  15. I have a nice microwave that I burned popcorn in (damn you and your lies, Alton Brown), and I don’t even think bleach got the smell out. I’m sorry.

  16. Ah, mon dieu, thank you everyone who left a comment. Too many to respond to, ack! I read every comment and appreciate your words.

I’d just like to say: I bought two lemons, getting the microwave next week Thursday. If the smell doesn’t come out we’ll buy a new one.

  17. OK, not that I have any first-hand experience with this, but that apartment looks huge and immaculate by New York standards! Congrats! Gorgeous floors, too, by the way.
